UNDERGROUND SEWAGE NETWORK IN ELAMKULAM : PROJECT OF 63.91 CRORES
Kochi : The Cabinet has approved the installation of underground sewage (toilet waste) network and related facilities at a cost of Rs 63.91 crores at Elamkulam (54th division) in the Corporation. With the implementation of the project, toilet waste from houses and apartments in the division will be piped to the plant for processing. The project aims to fully utilize the sewage treatment plant (toilet waste treatment plant) carrying 50 lakhs liters per day that has been constructed at Elamkulam. For this project, 16.94 km long underground switch pipelines will be laid and two large underground tanks will be newly constructed to collect toilet waste. Currently, there are only sewage connections from the toilets of 1184 buildings to the Sewage treatment plant at Elamkulam. The new network will provide connections to 2000 houses and 45 apartment buildings.
Sewage pipelines will be laid under the roads. 14.39 Crores will be spent on rehabilitating roads while laying pipelines for the project. This is included in the estimate and manholes will be installed at 30 meters intervals. The toilet waste is collected from houses and buildings is first accumulated in large underground tanks and then pumped and transported to the treatment plant in Elamkulam. The 3 Underground tanks are required for the project including one existing tank. A tank will be constructed in the premises of treatment plant in Elamkulam itself. Another tank will also be built in Rail Nagar area. The plan to divide the division into 5 zones can be utilized for the next 30 years. It is expected that the quality of life of the people in the area will increase and the water authority will get more income with the implementation of the project. The water authority project formed after discussions held by Mayor M Anilkumar, Division Councillor Antony Painuthara and others.
