LARGE BUILDING NEAR LIGHTHOUSE ONLY WITH CENTRAL APPROVAL

 

Applicable in 17 places in Kerala and Mahe

 

New Delhi: 17 Nov 2021- Prior permission of the Central Government is required for construction of tall buildings near lighthouses and planting of large trees. This is to facilitate shipping and boat traffic control systems. The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Water Transport have notified the draft that Marine Aids to Navigation (Removal and Alteration of Obstructions) Act, which will declare at least one kilo meter radius of the lighthouse as a control zone. In addition, allow the construction of a lower height building as far as the lighthouse can be seen. In Kerala, a control zone has been proposed near 17 lighthouses from to Kasargod to Vizhinjam and in Mahe. The notification also states the maximum height of the buildings that can be constructed near each lighthouse. It varies from 10m to 41m at various places in Kerala. After 3 months that the respective district collectors should be submitted the report  to the Deputy Director General in charge of Marine Navigation that did not block the light in the lighthouse. Existing trees should be pruned so as not to obstruct the view. The public can send their comments by December 15 to noida-dgll@nic.in.
